Homemade Bread

It’s not the best in the world — tastes a bit flat — but it’s fine, and best of all, it’s fast.

Homemade Bread, adapted from a recipe that’s been in my mother’s recipe box forever

3 c. flour
2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. sugar
2 1/4 tsp. instant yeast
1 1/2 c. very warm water
2 Tbsp. butter

Put the butter in the water to melt and set aside.

Combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a large bowl. Add water and butter and stir well to combine; dough will be wet. Cover the bowl with a clean tea towel and let it rise for 30 minutes.

Grease a 9″ loaf pan. Punch down the bread dough and pour it into the pan. Poke it until it’s relatively even, then cover it with the tea towel and let it rise for another hour. Preheat the oven to 375 near the end of the rising time.

Bake for about an hour, or until it sounds good and hollow when it’s thwacked. Serve like you’d serve bread, on account of it’s bread.
